The North Eastern Kenya Red Cross coordinator Mohamed Abdikadir said the number of flood victims increased as the River Tana burst its bank flooding farms and homesteads in Garissa town.

Mohamed added that many residents in Bulla Kamor, Windsor,Bulla Vumbi, Bulla sheikh, and Bulla Punda were displaced after the surging waters marooned their residential houses.

“Many were relocating to safer grounds such as Garissa Polytechnic, Hyuga School, and Kazuko Girls Primary were turned into internally displaced persons camps.
Speaking to The Eastleigh Voice the coordinator said almost all the farms along the river were submerged affecting the livelihood of thousands of farmers.
He revealed the Kenya Red Cross volunteers successfully rescued 41 farmers stranded by the raging floods.
On intervention measures the Coordinator said distribution of food and non-food items to the internally displaced kicked off in Wajir and Mandera which were worst affected by the rains.
“We shall also roll out humanitarian assistance to River Tana flood victims in Garissa Town who are camping in schools, “said Mohammed.
Halima Abdi a resident of Bulla Punda said they were shocked by the floods that caught them by surprise.
“ We were forcefully evicted by the floods that swept some of my house belongings, I had to call my relatives who assisted in evacuating us and we managed to carry portable items to the nearby Kazuko girls primary leaving our house as the water rose to knee-level within an hour ‘ said Halima.
The Garissa County CEC for Roads and Housing Abdinassir Mohamed said many people in Garissa County were in dire need of humanitarian assistants.
He said the heavy rains rendered many roads in the County impassable affecting the transport sector that supplies food to retail shops.
He said Holugho Liboi, Balambala, and Dadaab Sub Counties were worst affected.
